Majors & minors

I’ll be honest, the net net of my social media consumption is surely negative. However, there are a few things that social media, notably Tiktok, has introduced into my life that I’m grateful for.

One that has come up recently is the idea of majors and minors in your life.

A con to living in as many places as I have is long distance friendships. I have a lot of people in my life that I love a lot and see rarely. It can be a pretty big commitment to set aside the time these people deserve to call them and catch up. My long-distance-friendship-catch-up-phone-calls are almost always over an hour. And it’s typically someone on either side of the line having reached a destination that induces the hang up - not that we’ve run out of things to say.

One of my favorite ways to stay on top of some of these LDFs (long distance friendships) is group chats. I have a few - all with equally strange names - that are pinned to the top of my messages. Texts come through when we’re reminded of each other - someone went to a particularly good yoga class, someone started a new reality tv season that’s piquing their interest, someone found a good new recipe.

Tiktok recently introduced ‘majors and minors’ to the group chat.

Every couple months or so, one of my friends will text the rest of us, “I think we’re due for a major/minor session”. The idea is to send through the couple most important things going on with your life right then, and a couple of the secondary’s.

My majors right now are getting onto the schedule teaching at this new yoga studio and solidifying myself at my company. Minors are probably dating and freelance work.

It’s a quick, fun way for us to all stay on top of each other’s ‘big things’.

I don’t say it often… but thanks, Tiktok.
