Life is a
Living in New York, you get used to certain things. One of those things is The Crazies. Don’t make eye contact. Don’t look scared. Absolutely do not respond. Over time, it’s just part of the scenery. However, today, there were two that I just couldn’t shake. I’ve culled it down to just one. You can just use your imagination for the other.
It is 70º outside, in case you missed it, and I had meetings all day pretty much until 3pm. 3 hit and I looked over at my coworker/friend, Phoebe. “It is time for a walk.”
Fortunately, Phoebe also had a breather, and we began to make our way to the west side highway. An absolute treat. We had not been over to the west side highway since it at least October. People were OUT and ABOUT, but there was one block that we hit that randomly was fairly empty. It was just us, a few people solidly up in front of us, and a couple scattered men leaning up against the buildings.
Just before we hit the crosswalk, Phoebe and I were yapping away when one of the building-leaners lurched forward. We barely broke stride as he screamed, “LIFE IS A D*CK GIRLS AND YOU MUST KEEP S*CKING.”
(Asterisks to make it all a little less egregious. However, not much you can do there. I debated just saying ‘he said something insane’, but, honestly, I really needed the quote to accurately paint this picture.)
Unlike most of the crazies I encounter, this was a crazy that Phoebe and I obviously could not let go of.
“That was meant for us!” she exclaimed, once we were a safe distance.
“Oh, absolutely. He was waiting to tell us that.”
The sidewalk had gotten crowded again, and I snuck a peek behind us to see if anyone else had suffered our same fate, but the man was back against the side of the building, tranquil as ever.
I can’t help thinking… what on earth is the universe trying to tell me?
