Firsts

I just had two huge first times.

I finally had a celebrity spotting. I feel like everyone but me has seen someone in New York. At long last, on my trek through Penn Station to find my Amtrak, I had it - I saw Tony Goldwyn, aka the president from Scandal. Sure, I would have rather seen Harry Styles with Zoe Kravitz, but beggars cannot be choosers and I am thrilled to at long last be part of the club. I am also thrilled that I recognized him. Much to my family’s chagrin, I still have not watched the show (I know, I know, it’s incredible).

My second induction came as I was standing in line waiting to buy banana pudding at Magnolia Bakery. The woman in front of me was acting very strange. First, she reached over behind the glass to grab a slice of carrot cake. Not allowed. Who reaches behind the glass?!

The person working looked at her very kindly and said ‘anything else I can help you with?’, which I admired. She might have gotten a bit more of a ‘let us help you with that next time’ from me. The woman in line shook her head and sort of drifted along, looking around aimlessly. Then, when the three people behind the counter were assisting other people, she turned around, gave me a lost look, and drifted right on and out of the bakery.

I could not believe it. I have never, in all my life, which is actually pretty unbelievable, witnessed theft. Maybe I’m just blind.

I stayed quiet. No way was I going to be the reason for someone getting arrested over a piece of cake. Then one of the workers looked directly at me. “Did she just walk out of here with that piece of cake?”

“She sure did.” No point in lying now, the lady was long gone.

“Man, I cannot believe that. Messed up.”

So, there you have it. Boom boom. Two firsts.
