Conflicting Schedules
“I’m excited to see you in a week,” I say, struggling to put in my left Airpod.
“Huh?” Came through my right Airpod. I probably didn’t hear her right. Left Airpod in, I repeat myself.
“I’m excited to see you in a week, I said!”
“What are you talking about?”
Well, that one left a little less to be confused about.
“I’m coming home in a week,” I say. “I have a derm appointment with Jen.”
“Ohhh. Hm. You know, that’s not on my calendar. Let me check those dates,” she says, and I hear her head down the stairs.
Uh oh. Is this going to be a problem? I have not bought an Amtrak train ticket home in the hopes (assumption) that either she or my dad will make the trek to New Haven to scoop me from the MetroNorth station. I mentally prepare myself to either bargain with my sister or chalk up the extra cash for a pricier ticket in case she can’t make it.
“Oh, Larkin, uh oh, Dad and I can be on pick UP duty, but we’re heading to Pawley’s Island on Friday to see Jill and Barry.”
Pawley’s Island?! First I’ve heard of this. Sounds like a blast. A warm blast.
“Ah, okay! Well I’ll still see you for a couple days, then! I’m planning on coming in that Thursday night, leaving either Saturday or Sunday.”
“And, just so you know, that’s the week that Clare leaves for Costa Rica,” she reminds me. “So it’ll mostly be 1x1 Cecily time.”
Going home, for me, is typically not equivalent of ‘getting some good, uninterrupted alone time’, nor is it the equivalent of ‘what empty bed should I choose to sleep in’, but that is quickly what this trip is shaping up to be. A nice recharge, just not necessarily in the way I’d imagined.

I had a lovely couple days with Cec, my youngest sister, and headed back to New York (after bargaining with her for a ride back to New Haven) yesterday afternoon. There’s a yoga class today I wanted to get back for, and I like a peaceful, travel-less Sunday. But there’s an alternate universe where my mom, Clare, Cecily (maybe, I’m not sure if she’s slicing this year), and I would have all been blogging on March 1st together. Instead, we’re checking in from South Carolina, Costa Rica, Connecticut, and Brooklyn, respectively.
Happy March, everyone! Thrilled to be back :)
