March 9th - What's Your Taste

I’m on DJ duty as Austin drives this morning. The first song I chose was pretty mellow, the second upbeat, and this third one is an oldie.

Someone asked me the other day what my music taste is and I got so tongue tied and confused by the question that I couldn’t answer.

Austin gives me a side eye. Seems like a pretty simple question to get tongue tied by, He says.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I think it’s actually just a question that society has told us to ask and so we do. Think about it. Have you ever been asked what your taste in food is?

I mean, most people have a favorite food.

Yes! I say. Without realizing it, he’s just made my point for me. So why don’t we say ‘what’s your favorite music’ instead of ‘what’s your music taste’?

This stumps him. He knows just as well as I do that the typical food questions are ‘what’s your favorite meal’ or ‘if you had to eat something right now, what would it be’. It’s never ‘describe your tastebuds’ or ‘what’s your mouth taste’. Hmmm, he says, I guess you’re right. It is an odd question when you really think about it.

I sit back and queue up my next song, satisfied.
